Tapping Abbey's anarchistic spirit and humor, WRENCHED explores the history of monkeywrenching and the motivation behind these acts. It features candid interviews with Abbey's close friends, those who inspired his most memorable characters. Outraged by the degradation of the American Southwest, they pioneered a radical form of environmental activism, a blueprint for "wrenching the system." Abbey’s writing became a call to action for the generation of conservationists who came of age in the '70s and '80s. WRENCHED follows the exploits of these determined monkeywrenchers as they cross legal and ethical lines to defend the land. The environmental group, Earth First! adopted Abbey's monkeywrench credo. As the movement grew in popularity in the '90s, governmental officials launched a counter offensive, portraying activists as "Eco-terrorists"- the number one threat to domestic security. This crackdown, known as "the green scare", provoked new strategies of direct action and civil disobedience. Abbey’s writing continues to motivate activists some thirty years later. WRENCHED captures the passing of the monkey wrench from the pioneers of eco-activism to the new generation who will carry Abbey's legacy into the 21st century. The fight continues to sustain the last bastion of the American wilderness - the spirit of the West.
